Below are some of the recent health and leisure industry construction projects that we have been involved with:
Help for Heroes
What an honour to be chosen by Interserve Construction to work on the new Help for Heroes development at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth. The new facilities will benefit military personnel and veterans undergoing recovery as a result of injuries in service. The complex consists of three new buildings including a gym, a twenty five metre competition pool, consultation rooms and hydrotherapy area with facilities. This development was not without challenges. Consisting of steel frame construction, powder coated aluminium windows, a specialist standing steam system for the walls and roof cladding and the addition to the swimming pool floor which can be raised or lowered as required. Davis & Barrett enjoyed the challenges that were laid in front of them using their knowledge from previous commercial works and inspired to work within Interserve’s vision.
Interserve Construction has chosen Davis & Barrett once again to provide a tailored made package of labour, brick and block work. This new modern state of the art four storey building will be shared by the University of Exeter, Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust for training and educational purposes, such as a GP training facility, a diabetes research facility and a postgraduate education centre to name a few. Work is due to start April 2012 and completion in October 2013.
Praze-an-Beeble Medical Centre
This new Medical Centre has replaced the existing GP practice at Praze-an-Beeble, providing a range of medical, nursing, therapy and social care services. It also has the capacity to accommodate other healthcare professionals and additional services within the community in line with national policy guidelines.
Constructed using traditional techniques this medical centre allowed Davis & Barrett to merge into the local environment, moulding local materials to form this modern yet traditional building. Completed in early 2010 this project demonstrates Davis & Barrett’s experience in traditional materials and construction techniques.
Sited on the existing hospital site in the Centre of Bristol, this former boiler house was the candidate for transformation into the main IT suite for the NHS trust. With both refurbishment and new build elements Davis & Barrett set straight to work undertaking extensive repairs to the existing masonry. Whilst a second team begun the re-modelling and new build. Location, Location, Location!
Access was the main hurdle to jump on this project and the management of Davis & Barrett considered the most appropriate method for every task they did to ensure the safety of their men and compliance with manual handling guidance. This involved utilizing mechanical off load facilities and communicating with the entire site team. Our supervisor shone brightly and allowed D&B to move at the pace required.
St Werburghs Community Centre
This new extension to St Werburghs community centre filled the remaining site, but in doing so provided much needed modern space to groups and voluntary organizations. With plinth brickwork and return piers this project required Davis & Barrett to efficiently undertake there works as not to hinder the other trades progression.
Refurbishment of the existing community centre was also undertaken, with structural openings being altered to comply with current legislation, and localized repairs to existing masonry works. This building has nestled into the community well and will hopefully provide comfortable modern spaces to the local community.
Sealey’s Hotel saw the conversion of this existing Hotel into apartments. Davis & Barrett provided considerable resources to re-model the internal layouts of the mature building. With many masonry repairs and alterations our commitment to provide the necessary resources was essential to the completion of this project.
Davis and Barrett are pleased to announce that work to extend Derriford Hospital Ophthalmology has begun. The hospital will require Davis & Barrett’s sensitivity due to being a live site throughout the works with factors such as control of vibration, noise and dust, these are just a few of the hurdles we need to overcome. Safety as always is a key issue to Davis & Barrett therefore all our subcontractors are trained in asbestos awareness by a UKATA trainer. Work on the hospital will improve the patients visiting the site. Using the existing masonry from the original hospital and extending the new unit using new masonry products provides a demonstration of Davis & Barrett versatility and vast experience in all construction methods.
Westbury Health Centre
This project involves the construction of a new two storey medical centre with consulting areas and treatment rooms. The new centre will replace an existing surgery and incorporate additional complementary services in order to create a new service led facility for Patients and people of Westbury.
Davis & Barrett are pleased to be part of delivering this service, undertaking the brick and block work package to this prominently brick clad surgery.
Stratton Hospital, Bude
Stratton hospital which opened in 1866 is one of the oldest community hospitals in the country. This project involves updating the facilities both in a refurbishment phase and a new build. The first phase involves re-modelling the existing building and will see improvements to the physiotherapy department, minor injuries and x-ray department. The second phase involves re-building and extending the existing facilities to provide additional outpatient facilities.
Asbestos Warning NB: All Davis and Barrett operatives are trained in Asbestos Awareness by a UKATA trainer
